Unfreedom Reading Group with Hannah Barker

The Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies invites you to participate in a reading group on the topic of Unfreedom, organized in anticipation of our 2020 annual conference.

At our first meeting on Oct. 8, we will discuss what unfreedom means and why it is used alongside more familiar terms like slavery, captivity, or servitude. As a starting point for our discussion, we will read a piece in which Suzanne Miers Oliver tests the boundaries of common legal, economic, and anthropological definitions of slavery.
