Downtown Parking FAQs for Students

Can a student still buy a parking permit for the Summer Semester at the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus?
Yes. There are available parking spaces in the Downtown Phoenix Campus Nursing & Healthcare Innovation (NHI) Garage; in DP1, DP2 and DP3; and DP5.  Permits are sold in Permit Sales at the Downtown Phoenix Campus Cashiering Office, 1st floor in University Center, Room 112, across from the lobby elevators.  Please bring your vehicle information, photo ID and method of payment (cash, check, or credit card). 

Available student parking and rates for the Summer Semester:
Downtown Phoenix (DP) surface parking permits are valid in ALL DP lots on a first-come, first-served basis at a prorated rate of $115/Summer Semester.  DP-1 is located at 320 N. 4th Avenue, DP-2 is located at 344 N 2nd Avenue and DP-3 is located at 353 N. 3rd Ave. 
** Phoenix Convention Center (CPEG)  STUDENTS HOLDING A CPE PERMIT MUST PARK IN DP5 from MAY 15, 2007 THROUGH AUGUST 15, 2007 OR in DP1, 2, 3, and McKinley after 3:00 PM.

This Fall, will parking be available for students living at Residential Commons?
Yes.  Residential Commons parking permits (a limited number) are available to Downtown Phoenix Campus students assigned to live at Residential Commons. Only Downtown Phoenix Campus Residential Commons residents may purchase and display a Residential Commons permit.

RC residents can buy a permit on a first-come, first-served basis at the Downtown Phoenix Campus Cashiering Office.

For students taking evening classes located at University Center, 411 N. Central Ave.:
After 3:00 p.m. students may cross park in the DP1, DP2, DP3 and Reciprocity Parking Lots, with a valid ASU parking permit and on a space-available basis. 

Can I buy both a Tempe parking permit and a Downtown Phoenix parking permit?
Yes. You can buy a parking permit for both campuses - just not online. Online Parking Services allows customers to buy - online - only one permit per year. To buy multiple permits, you must do so in person at the Cashiering Office.  All permits are sold based on availability.

Do I need to buy two permits?
No. You can and you may buy more than one permit, but you only need one!

If you elect to keep your Tempe permit for 2007-2008 you may park in the Reciprocal Parking Lot at the Downtown Phoenix Campus, where Tempe Campus permits are valid. The Reciprocal Parking Lot for the Downtown Phoenix Campus is located at 320 N. 4th Ave.

If you elect to buy only a Downtown Phoenix Campus parking permit, you may park on the Tempe Campus in Lot 59 East, the Reciprocal Parking Lot on Rural Road between Rio Salado and University Drive.

 What if I already own a Tempe Campus permit but want to exchange it for a Downtown Phoenix Campus permit?
You may exchange a Tempe Campus permit purchased for the 2007-2008 academic year for a Downtown Phoenix Campus permit.

All exchanges must be completed in person at the DPC Permit Sales office located in room 112 of the 411 N. Central building. Please bring with you the ASU Tempe permit and gate access card (if applicable) you wish to exchange.

What should I do with my “old” gate access card?
You must return the gate access card you were issued to Parking in order to avoid a $25 charge. You can drop it off or mail it: Downtown Phoenix Campus Cashiering Office, Room 112, University Center Building, 411 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ., 85004.

 Where is reciprocal parking located at the Downtown Phoenix Campus?
Reciprocal parking at the Downtown Phoenix Campus is located at 320 N. 4th Ave. on a space available basis with a valid ASU parking permit. 

Reciprocal parking for Downtown Phoenix Campus permits is available in Lot 59 East on the Tempe Campus, in green permit lot parking spaces on the Polytechnic Campus and in student lots on the West Campus. 

Is cross-parking allowed at the Downtown Phoenix Campus?
Yes, cross parking is permitted after 3 p.m. in DP1, DP2 and DP3, and in the Reciprocity Parking Lot, with a valid ASU parking permit and on a space-available basis.

 As on the Tempe Campus, is disabled parking at the Downtown Phoenix Campus all-access?
Downtown Phoenix Campus disabled permits provide access to disabled parking stalls in only the following ASU-controlled downtown parking locations:

  • University Center Garage (UC-1)
  • Nursing & Healthcare Innovation Garage (NHI) - only during business hours, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Residential Commons (RC)

When is the Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle available and where are its stops?
Free to all ASU students, faculty and staff, the Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle provides service from 6:30 a.m. - 10:30 p.m., Mon. - Fri.

The shuttle travels between the Downtown Phoenix Campus and the Tempe Campus about every 30 minutes for the Fall and Spring semesters and every hour for summer. Please allow sufficient time when traveling on the Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle. Due to unforeseen delays or unexpected traffic detours, you'll need to plan ahead to ensure that you arrive at your desired time.

  • The Tempe Campus shuttle stop (for pick-up and drop-off) is at the southeast corner of Forest Ave. and Lemon St. (south of the Student Services Building).
  • The Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle pick-up and drop-off is at the Mercado Building on 5th St. and Monroe St., and at the University Center, 1st and Taylor streets.

Does the shuttle service run on Saturdays and Sundays?
No. Shuttle service is provided Monday - Friday.

Will there be a Summer DPC shuttle?
Yes, there will be a Summer DPC shuttle which will run once per hour.

Do the shuttles for the West Campus and the East Campus stop at the Downtown Phoenix Campus?
No. Each of the ASU shuttles provides inter-Campus connection only between its respective Campus and the Tempe Campus. 

How many bicycles does the ASU Downtown Phoenix shuttle bus accommodate?
Each Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle features a bike rack that accommodates two bicycles on a first-come, first-served basis.

Can I safely ride my bicycle downtown?
There are several projects under construction downtown that require street closures and lane restrictions and it may not be safe to ride a bike in those areas. We encourage you to take great care in riding your bike downtown.

Is skateboarding permitted downtown?
The City of Phoenix prohibits skateboarding in downtown Phoenix.

Are electric vehicles permitted downtown?
The use of electric vehicles (golf carts, Segways, scooters, etc.) is discouraged.

Safety and Security?
ASU is deeply committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all members of the Downtown Phoenix Campus community.

An ASU Police commander and two sergeants are assigned to the Downtown Phoenix Campus to act as liaisons with the City of Phoenix Police, oversee the ASU Police aides, and work with the community to address safety and security needs at the Campus.

ASU Police aides and security staff are stationed in the lobby of the University Center and on-site at Residential Commons.

ASU Police aides provide security-related services to the Downtown Phoenix Campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are available to assist as safety escorts to and from ASU-owned or leased property and parking areas. For assistance call 602-496-3456.

Copper Square Ambassadors are on duty 7 days a week until 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and until 1:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The Ambassadors patrol Copper Square by foot or on bike, have a wealth of information about local attractions and events, and will escort you throughout the Copper Square area.

The City of Phoenix provides full-service police, fire, ambulance and other emergency and public safety services, and is the responder to all 911 calls.

 What are my options if I decide not to purchase a parking permit for the Downtown Phoenix Campus?

  • The Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle is available free of charge to all ASU faculty, staff and students. Service hours: 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through  Friday.  No service is provided on University holidays or during spring break. Please allow sufficient time when traveling on the Downtown Phoenix Campus shuttle. Due to unforeseen delays or unexpected traffic detours, you should plan ahead to ensure arriving at your desired time.
  • The ASU U-Pass is available free of charge to all faculty, staff and students. The bus pass grants FREE unlimited access on all Valley Metro bus routes.To obtain a free bus pass, visit the Downtown Phoenix Campus Cashiering Office.
  • Bus routes: the Central Transit Station is located across the street from the University Center (411 Central Ave) and serves the following bus routes: 0, 3, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, Red Line, Blue Line, Grand Avenue Limited, 560 Express, RAPID. Visit www.valleymetro.org for more information regarding these bus routes.
  • Metered parking: the City of Phoenix operates 2-hour, 1-hour, 30-minute and 15-minute meters. These meters require coins from 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. The meters currently are free after 5:00 p.m., and on weekends and holidays. The City of Phoenix closely monitors these meters (and payment of parking violation fines). It is your responsibility to pay all parking tickets and fines associated with their use.

How can I get around downtown?
Get there in a DASH!

The DASH is the free Downtown Area Shuttle that ASU faculty, staff and students use to get around the Downtown Phoenix area. For further information visit www.valleymetro.org.
